Introduction to
intellectual property

Intellectual Property (IP) plays a huge role in what has been defined as “fashion law” over the past decade.  IP rights allow designers to gain financial benefit and recognition for their creations. IP protection is used to protect a designer’s brand. Branding in the fashion world is the act of creating a name, symbol, colors or style that differentiates
one fashion design collection from another. A designer’s Brand is the most important piece of intellectual property they own. It is worth the expense to take time to create a brand and protect it by registering logos and brand names with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and protecting original prints with copyright registrations.
